Description

Bats - the mysterious masters of the night sky. Many of these elusive and often misunderstood creatures live near Hok Tau reservoir. Watch how they fly around hunting insects, and listen in to their echolocation calls using a specialised bat detector.

The areas around Sha Lo Tung are also a hotspot for fireflies, putting up a dazzling display of tiny lights all over the area as they try to attract a mate.

This guided walk will take you to Hok Tau Reservoir - an area that is home to many bats. From there we continue the walk through a dense forest to the ghost village of Sha Lo Tung and finally down to Fung Yuen, from where we catch a minibus to Tai Po Market MTR station.

On the way we will look for other night life. Commonly spotted are various toads and frogs. In the rivers we pass we can find various fish, shrimps, and sometimes the Hong Kong Newt.

Start: 19:30 at Fanling MTR, outside exit C.

Finish: Tai Po Market MTR station.

Fee excludes minibus fares from Fanling to Hok Tau and from Fung Yuen to Tai Po Market station.

Organised by

Tour operator offering adventurous sight-seeing tours in the countryparks of Hong Kong.

I have been operating tours since 2013, and operate around 150 tours every year, and offer a wide variety of tours, in difficulty ranging from relaxed boat tours to demanding hikes. All tours have an element of adventure, and are designed to show you a side of Hong Kong that even many locals don't know exists.

Recurring themes of the tours are nature and wildlife, with a focus on the Hong Kong Geopark on one hand, and the remarkable rich ecology on the other hand. As there is a lot of history and culture to the various parts of Hong Kong's country parks as well, this will not be ignored. On the contrary, human culture and history is an integral part of the development of an area, and with it the current day ecology.

All of these tours are designed to add an element of adventure. While some are easy and can be done by people with almost any ability, other tours are more physically demanding however no special skills or hiking experience are expected. Snorkelling trips require participants to be able to swim well. Read the description to see which tours suit your interests and abilities best!
