Social Enterprise Summit Program at a glance: http://ses.org.hk/2017-symposium/

1. Background

As a global effort to rethink the nature of business enterprise and to redefine business success, the B Corp movement has swept across the business world, showcasing businesses that have transformed themselves as a force for good.

A critical mass of B Corps is emerging. There are now over 2,200 certified B Corps from over 50 countries and 150 industries.

One of the major challenges in broadening and deepening the movement is the scarcity of outspoken advocates who are knowledgeable about nature and promise of B Corps and possess the qualities to act as evangelists for the movement. This course has been designed to address this gap.

The design of this course is inspired by a course with the same title offered by B Lab UK ( http://www.bleaders.uk/ ) but we have expanded it to leverage the presence of a number of B Corps experts and CEOs who will be addressing the Social Enterprise Summit in November 6-8, 2017 in Hong Kong. We have invited the Course Leader of the UK course, Ms Georgie Morris, to come to Hong Kong to co-facilitate this course.

2. Course Objectives

● To enable the participants to have a deep appreciation of the WHAT, WHY and HOW of being a B Corp
● To enhance the confidence of the participants to act as spokespersons for the B Corp movement
● To build a community of B Corp advocates who could serve a variety of roles to deepen the B Corp movement, such as educators, advisors, promoters, consultants, or B Corp founders

3. Target Participants (local and overseas)

Those who enroll in this course are likely to have the following characteristics:

● Eager to know more about the global movement of business as a force for good
● Want to obtain an in-depth knowledge of the nature, trends and challenges of the B Corp movement, globally as well as locally
● Are keen to prepare themselves to act as advocates for the movement, inspiring and supporting more companies to become B Corps
● Want to join a community of like-minded persons who are committed to leveraging business to create a more prosperous, sustainable and equitable world

Special arrangement to accommodate local (Hong Kong) participants and participants from outside Hong Kong:

As the course will leverage the presence of the B Corps-related overseas speakers at the Social Enterprise Summit to be held on November 7-8, 2017, we will have two groups of participants, Groups A and B.

Group A are those participants who reside in Hong Kong and for whom some of the workshops will be held over a few weeks prior to the Summit.

Group B are those who are from overseas and for whom all workshops will be held immediately before and after the Summit during the week commencing November 6. They will be able to complete the entire Course within four full days November 6-9.

4. Course Format

This course is self-motivated and self-directed. As the participants are all seasoned businesspersons or professionals, we are just creating a number of learning opportunities for them to learn and interact with each other.

The acid test of the course’s effectiveness will be judged by the performance of the participants at the Graduation Workshop when each participant is required to do a 10-minute presentation on what they have learnt.

The learning opportunities include, but are not limited, to the following:

Part A Guided reading and video watching

Five pieces of reading and five short videos on B Corps will be provided to the participants for study at their leisure. Total time required to go through all the reading and videos: 2 to 3 hours. A 10-question quiz will be administered to provide feedback to the participants’ understanding of the subject.

Part B Pre-Summit Intensive workshops

Three half-day workshops will be conducted prior to the Social Enterprise Summit to be held in early November 2017.

During the workshops, the participants will exchange ideas on the global significance, anticipated impact and major challenges of the B Corp movement.

The workshops will also include a hands-on project in which each participant will apply the B Impact Assessment on at least one local company that they have knowledge of.

Part C Social Enterprise Summit B Corp Track

At the Social Enterprise Summit in early November this year, ten overseas experts and B Corp founders/CEOs have been invited to come to Hong Kong to share their experience. It is a unique and rare opportunity to come into personal contact with so many advocates and practitioners in this field.

Participants are required to take part in all the sessions of the B Corp Track at the Summit, including the Opening and Concluding sessions during which there will be B Corp experts delivering Keynote speeches.

Participants will be provided in advance information about the speakers and are urged to study the background of the latter so that they could have a better appreciation of their sharing at the Summit.

D. Post-Summit workshops

There will be two half-day workshops after the Summit.

Consolidation Workshop
Participants will be facilitated to consolidate what they have learnt from the Course and to identify specific challenges that they might have as advocates of the B Corp movement. At the end of the Workshop, each participant will have developed a Personal Development Plan to guide their future learning and actions.

Graduation Workshop
Each participant will have to give a 10-minute presentation on the topic of Why Your Company Should Consider Becoming a B Corp . This will be a simulation exercise to prepare the participants to do similar presentations to business audiences.
