Course summary

With valuation surveyors operating across a wide range of asset types within commercial, residential and rural property, RICS is aiming to provide a clear journey through valuation pathways and competencies with the awareness and understanding of becoming an RICS Registered Valuer.

The course has been designed to evolve technical skills and knowledge of professionals who work in the built environment, it provides detailed knowledge needed for valuation, focusing on the main valuation techniques, support the development of the core Valuation Pathway competencies (Inspection, Measurement of land and property, and Valuation).

This course will support professionals through the membership assessment process and activities, allowing them create and track their professional experience, receive feedback and support from RICS Assessors. This will simplify and allow candidates to ease through the process and prepare them as much as possible for the final assessment. These will steer the learners in the right direction to become a Chartered Surveyor in Valuation or any RICS Pathway that declaring the valuation as core competency. At the end of the course is an exam to check your understanding of the technical content and a mock interview with the speaker who is also our assessor.


Who is this course for?

This course accelerates the APC process to become a member of the RICS by giving you the skills and knowledge to work in Valuation on a global basis as identified by the RICS and giving you support through the membership process, suitable for:

- All Valuation APC candidates (or any RICS Pathway that declaring the valuation competency) who want to accelerate their progress
- Professionals from other backgrounds who wish to become chartered as Valuation members
- Professionals who want to either move into valuation from another role or gain a fundamental understanding of the key valuation methods theories and techniques


Course structure

This course will be delivered as a blended learning course which includes online modules plus face to face consolidation and membership workshops. Each online module will take approximately 3-4 weeks to complete. The half day face to face consolidation session will review the online module content, answer questions and provide further context and practical application, added to this are the half day face to face membership workshops, which focus on all key activities of the membership assessment process.

E-learning sessions
The online technical e-learning sessions provide you with a detailed overview of the principles and methodologies covered within each module. These are created by highly experienced trainers to give the core competencies of Valuation practice.

Reading Material
Further your study and understanding of the methodologies with the directed reading material. Sourced from textbooks and articles, these readings support your development throughout the course programme


Face to Face Sessions
The face to face sessions consolidate your learning from the modules. Here you will have a chance to meet the course tutor and to ask any questions directly.

Case Studies
Technical case studies provide you with examples of practice, within these case studies you will be able to practice the theory taught within the module. Your responses will be shared within the online forums.

Online forum
Each module has a dedicated forum to provide you with constant access to your tutor and a shared learning area with fellow delegates. Creating a dedicated learning environment you will be able to partake in topic discussion and share you learning with lots of other people from all over the world.

End of module quizzes
At the end of each module is a short quiz, to check your understanding of the content and to help track your progress.

Summaries of experience for Assessor feedback
A RICS Assessor will review your summary of experience for each competency and give personalized feedback strengths and weaknesses.


About the speaker:

Mr Vincent Cheung

Executive Director, Asia Colliers International

Vincent Cheung is currently the Executive Director, Asia of Colliers International. Vincent has over 19 years of real estate experience in Greater China and Asia markets, and he’s a seasoned professional in real estate valuation and consultancy. Vincent is a Fellow Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, a Member of the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors and a Registered Professional Surveyor (General Practice) Division. Vincent is also an Independent Non-Executive Director of a Hong Kong main board listed company and an active commentator on major media channels.

Mr Thomas Lam

Senior Director, Head of Valuation and Consultancy, Knight Frank Petty Limited

Thomas Lam is a Senior Director, Head of Valuation & Consultancy at Knight Frank, with responsibilities of overseeing the General Valuation and Mortgage Valuation Departments for Hong Kong and Macau. Prior to this role, he was the head of the company’s Research & Consultancy Department for Greater China (2011-2014). Thomas is a Fellow of The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, a Professional Member of The Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors, a Member of China Institute of Real Estate Appraisers, a Registered Professional Surveyor (General Practice Division), a Registered Business Valuer of the HK Business Valuation Forum and an Ordinary Member of Hong Kong Securities Institute. He has extensive experience in the real estate industry, with expertise in market research, corporate advisory, valuation, real estate finance, investment advisory and business development for Asia Pacific markets (ex-Japan). Thomas is regularly featured in the media for his views on regional and global property markets.
