About this Event
Dr. Annamária Neag, Research Fellow, Bournemouth University's Centre for Excellence in Media Practice (UK)
In 2019 only, almost 14.000 unaccompanied asylum-seeking children were registered in the European Union. That is seven times more than the number of enrolled students at HKBU School of Communication. Refugee children pose considerable policy challenges: their integration is of utmost importance. Studies show that refugee children have relevant IT skills, but they lack the ability to make critical media choices. In this talk I will present a research project (funded by the EU’s H2020 programme) that investigated how unaccompanied refugee children use digital technology and social media in four European countries. Media literacy education is one of the tools that could empower young refugees in becoming active citizens. I will thus discuss how these findings can help in developing media literacy tools for refugee children’s civic participation.
