Event description
For one night only discover the flavors of Club Rangoon signatures with a six-course wine pairing in collaboration with Springbok Wines.

About this event

After the tremendous success of ‘Myanmar Meets Portugal’, a collaboration between Club Rangoon and private kitchen Mesa, the Burmese restaurant is back for another cross-continental experience, traversing with South Africa this time around. Only on 1st December, joining hands with Club Rangoon will be Springbok Wines, whose curated selection of South African wines will be carefully paired alongside six courses prepared by Club Rangoon’s Executive Chef Karisa Cheque.

The six-course dinner begins with light nibbles of Samusa and a Laphet Thoke, the classic snack from the street food stalls in Myanmar and a refreshing tea leaf salad, before continuing onto Village-Style Egg Curry Bites flavored with caramelized onion and a zesty coriander sauce. From the Springbok Wines team, the starters are joined with a glass of Swerwer Chenin Blanc, showcasing one of South Africa’s most prominent wines. As each course is served, Chef Karisa will be joined by Abilio Carneiro and Alan Shaw, founding members from Springbok wines, to present the individual pairings and why they were chosen; making this dinner not only an enjoyable experience but also an educational one.

A tasting menu wouldn’t be complete without Club Rangoon’s signature noodle dish, Mohinga, also known as the national dish of Myanmar. The comforting bowl of thin, round rice noodles has a catfish broth flavored with lemongrass and homemade chili oil. Crispy split pea and a soft-boiled egg adds to the texture for the perfect mouthful, washed down with a glass of Spioenkop ‘1900’ Sauvignon Blanc.

With both a seafood and meat main, diners will enjoy a fragrant Pazun Hin, a red-based curry that has a gentle spice from ginger and tumeric — expertly balanced with a Bruce Jack Pinot Noir. The final main of the six-course tasting menu is the Burmese rendition of a classic beef biryani, A Mel Thar Dan Bauk, paired with Spioenkop Pinotage. This red wine is distinctive to South Africa, making it a unique addition to the tasting menu. With tasting notes of dark forest fruit, it is the ideal accompaniment to the tender meat and saffron spiced basmati rice. With all the six-courses of the special tasting menu, the collaboration has been carefully planned to marry the finest from both Myanmar and South Africa.

A Banana Crumble completes the meal, where a warm banana cream is served with a scoop of Burmese tea ice cream and a generous sprinkle of homemade crumble. The comforting dessert goes along with the rich De Grendel Noble Late Harvest; a South African dessert wine with complex flavors of fruits and honey. The collaboration is one of many more upcoming ‘Myanmar Meets’ dinners where Club Rangoon join hands with chefs, restaurants or suppliers to connect their diners to different culinary experiences.
