Description
2018, What a year!
So many ways to define it, and view it, but there's no doubt it was a watershed moment for Malaysia. Perhaps one way to look at it, is the Year of 1MDB - how it defined the politics of the first half, and the policies of the second.
On Feb 12, the first 1MDB related trial will begin proper, with former Prime Minister Najib Razak in the dock. It's all well and good that Malaysia's biggest ever scandal is finally given its day in the court of law, rather than the court of public opinion.
But the question that faces those in power today, and Malaysians who need to hold them accountable, is what next? Will we get our money back? Will there be a 2MDB, and if so, how do we prevent it from spiralling out of control?
Given that the foreign media came under tremendous pressure and were subject to great scrutiny in reporting this issue, the Foreign Correspondents Club of Malaysia is proud to host several distinguished speakers to bang their heads together at a forum entitled: 1MDB - Never Again?
OUR PANELISTS
On the panel will be Damansara MP Tony Pua (right), who is also Political Secretary to the Finance Minister, perhaps the most clued-in person on the 1MDB saga ever since it began to cause whispers of concern by raising RM5 billion in Islamic bonds 10 years ago.
Joining him is Dato' Akhbar Satar (left), president of the Malaysian chapter of Transparency International, an independent international body dedicated to fighting corruption at all levels of society.
And also the executive director of the Center to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4) Cynthia Gabriel (middle). The human rights advocate and anti-corruption activist was part of the Council of Eminent Persons' special committee that looked into 1MDB's dealings.
