Overview

Traces of Yesterday: Uncovering Hong Kong’s Intangible Soul Conducted in English with Chinese

Step into a nostalgic visual journey with Simon Go (Founder of Hulu Culture) and Paul Chan (Co-founder of Walk in Hong Kong) as they uncover the shifting face—and enduring spirit—of our city.

Guided by the mid-century lens of Miroslav Šašek’s 1965 masterpiece This is Hong Kong, this conversation explores how the city’s landscape, traditions, and intangible culture have transformed across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and the New Territories. Simon will also share rare insights into Šašek’s historical collaboration with the Hong Kong Tourism Association and the commissioned works that followed his iconic book.

Through a rich display of photography, historical storytelling, and personal observations, Simon and Paul invite you to reflect on the traces of yesterday that still shape Hong Kong’s identity today—bridging Šašek’s vibrant 1960s illustrations with the living, breathing character of the city we call home.

A guided walk-through of "This is M. Šašek" follows the talk for those interested in seeing how history, travel, and visual storytelling converge.
