About this event
In a hyper-connected yet fractured digital world, the rise of polarized discourses on social media has deeply reshaped how communities relate, clash, and fracture. This sharing brings together artist HOLOK Chen, Wong Ka Ying KY and journalism scholar Professor Francis Lee, to reflect on the mental health consequences of living in these contested spaces.
Drawing from her observations of internet subcultures, memes, “doomer” generations, and the nihilistic and apocalyptic darkness emerging online, KY will explore how irony and despair become coping mechanisms in the digital commons. Meanwhile, HOLOK will share their artistic research and lived tactics in navigating polarization, conflict, and digital estrangement, offering insights into resilience and vulnerability in the face of online division. Professor Francis Lee will analyse recent trends in online public discourse surrounding various social incidents, examining the dynamic interplay between digital and real-world spheres.
Together, the session examines how digital polarization permeates real life, prompting urgent conversations about solidarity, mental well-being, and the possibility of imagining new forms of connection amid virtual chaos.
Talk will be conducted in Cantonese

HOLOK Chen
Once upon a time, there were a group of alien people wandering around across the universe, hidden between the cracks….
Their discourse surrounds the ideas of precarious life, displacement and dysphoria through speculative fabulation and void punk. The gender-neutral persona takes inspirations from sci-fi and circus performers, expressing a profound sense of loss and sadness.
