Since 2019, approximately 300,000 Hongkongers have emigrated overseas, forming a significant wave of diaspora. The stories of these individuals include both inspiring tales of striving in new environments and the complex emotions tied to leaving their homeland. A key question arises: are they “foreigners” excluded from the national narratives of their new countries, or are they forging a new identity that transcends geographical boundaries?
Dr. Lok Wing Kai, a humanities scholar and author of Emotional Capitalism and Hong Kong as Other, has himself relocated to Canada in recent years. In this talk, he will draw on cultural theories and his personal experiences to examine the multifaceted realities of diasporic life. He will delve into the identity struggles faced by Hongkongers abroad and explore how emotional connections between the new and the old can transform challenges into new possibilities for action.
Talk will be conducted in Cantonese
