About this event

Ghosts and monsters do more than disturb our everyday reality—in their singular forms, they give shape to our deepest anxieties and terrors. The supernatural and the anomalous not only reflect our present unease but also gesture toward our unspoken longings. Across its many variations and subgenres, horror charts different modes of feeling and expression, offering a lens through which we can confront contemporary questions and concerns.

In this talk moderated by Ernest Ip, artist Angela Su and film scholar Enoch Tam Yee Lok will take horror cinema as a point of departure to explore how fear and hope become entangled. Moving between Southeast Asian and Western cinemas, they will traverse post-apocalyptic worlds and the many mutations of horror to consider how these works illuminate our shared anxieties and collective imagination. Beyond conjuring dread, could such visions also open pathways to alternative communities and new social forms? And if so, might writing horror itself become a way to recompose the present and envision futures anew?

This event also marks the launch of Angela Su’s new collective creative project. Those drawn to horror storytelling and speculative fiction are invited to join and explore the deeper resonances between horror and culture.
