‘Fupao Mary X Menos - the Birth of a Photography Zine’
In the contemporary era, amidst an overwhelming flood of images, viewing photographs has largely been confined to sliding up and down on the small, grid-like screens of smartphones. Printed media is gradually fading into obscurity. In a fast-paced, efficiency-driven city like Hong Kong, what value or significance does an independent photography zine (PhotoZine) hold? Furthermore, how can a PhotoZine respond to both societal issues and the essence of photography itself?
This sharing session will feature two distinct independent photography zine publishers—“FuPao Mary” and “Menos”—each with their unique styles. They will guide the audience through the process of creating a PhotoZine, from conceptualizing themes, selecting photographs, editing, designing, to printing. Through this, they will also explore how these zines address societal concerns and reflect on the art of photography.

He has received over 20 domestic and international photojournalism awards, with his works exhibited in Hong Kong, Taipei, Berlin, Toronto, and Vienna. About your organisation
FuPao Mary”
FuPao Mary is an independently published photography zine, first launched in 2021. It is edited by six Hong Kong photographers—Chan Cheuk Fai, AK, Fung Hoi Kin, PW, Paul Yeung, and Ballade Ho. Each issue explores distinct themes to respond to the times and society. To date, four issues have been released: Issue 1 “Incontinence,” Issue 2 “Displacement,” Issue 3 “(),” and a special edition “Hair.”
Menos”
The local photography group Menos was established in 2018, with members showcasing diverse styles and backgrounds, each bringing their unique perspectives while documenting various facets of society in their respective roles. One year after its formation, the group compiled the works of numerous members and published the photography collection Prologue. The inaugural issue of Prologue took “Hong Kong Street” as its theme, capturing the myriad scenes of Hong Kong’s streets through the viewfinder. It represented a collective achievement of like-minded photographers, offering diverse social viewpoints. Following the release of the first issue, Menos began working on the second volume of Prologue. However, the project was put on hold due to unpredictable social circumstances at the time. In 2021, Menos relaunched the initiative, reorganizing the photographs and shifting from a straightforward documentary approach to a conceptual one to narrate Hong Kong’s story. This effort culminated in the creation of No Wind, No Rain, No Sunshine. The title of the photography collection No Wind, No Rain, No Sunshine is derived from Su Shi’s poem Calming the Waves: Don’t Listen to the Sound of Rain Striking the Leaves, using weather as a metaphor for suppressed emotions, and extending this theme through imagery.
