Cabinets of Curiosities have a long and rich history that defies any of today’s classifications. In these cabinets the visitor would fine natural specimens, culled from all parts of the world, luxuriously crafted objects, as well as ethnographic artefacts from ‘exotic’ cultures. The collectors ranged from royalty to simple doctors and explorers and, of course, their cabinets reflected their own interests and pursuits, fulfilling different purposes. This lecture explains what was in these cabinets and why, exploring the different public and private roles they played according to their owners.
